Green Machine was kind enough to write-up a DIY article for us involving his 1969 Nova and it's desire to have new body mounts. Thanks for the tips!
I replaced the body mounts on my 69 nova with relative ease. First and foremost spray all the bolts with some kind of rust penetrant, this will make breaking those old bolts loose a lot easier! I had a few bolts that actually made a popping noise when I first broke them loose.
Step 1: It may be necessary to remove the front bumper, I have a fiberglass bumper on my car and it hung up when I started jacking up the body. I also do not have inner fender wells in my car, I do not think they would need to be removed but check and make sure while you are following these steps that they are not hanging up any where.
Step 2: Loosen the three body mount bolts on the driver's side, do not take them all the way out as this will help keep the body in the correct position. There will be one by the radiator (which has a nut on it), firewall and another at the end of the sub-frame (these bolt directly into the body of the car).
Step 3: Go to the passenger side and take all three bolts completely out for the body mounts (Same location as the drivers side).
Step 4: Jack up the passenger side, use a 2x4 or a 2x6 piece of wood to help distribute the weight when jacking up the body on the pinch welds (the part at the very bottom of the body not the fender). You will need to jack up only the body just enough to get the body mounts out and the new ones in, (all 4 wheels stayed on the ground) it does not matter what order you switch out the mounts. I had to pry on the rear sub-frame to replace the mount (this may not be necessary if you do not have subframe connectors). Refer to the sheet that comes with the mounts on which ones go where. The mounts are installed dry.
Step 5: Make sure the body mounts are centered properly and install the fastners loose, let the body down.
Step 6: Go to the driver's side and finish taking out the body mount bolts.
step 7: You may be able to skip this step if you do not have sub-frame connectors; Unbolt the steering gear box, there are three bolts that hold it in place that go through the frame to the steering gear box. The head of the bolt is on the outside of the frame in the wheel well, you can let the steering gear box just hang. I could not get the body to raise up far enough until I did this. I still had to pry on the floorboard to switch out the mount at the end of the sub-frame door area).
Step 8: Repeat steps 4 and 5 (except you will be working on the drivers side).
Step 9: Reinstall the 3 bolts for the steering gear box.
Step 10: Tighten all six body mount hardware, I could not find a torque spec for this.
Step 11: Reinstall front bumper if you had to remove it and you are done!
